This is supported by the Environmental Protection Act of 1986, which defines a coastal regulatory zone as a 500-metre stretch of land off the high-tide mark and measuring 100 meters along the shorelines of backwaters, rivers, lagoons, estuaries, bays and creek. This Act further states that no industrial or residential, tourism related or other activities should be conducted within the CRZ without a clear certificate from the government agency in charge at the state level. In the state of Kerala, such approval for construction in areas classified as CRZ is given by the LCZMA which is the Kerala’s equivalent of the authority.
