Haryana Orbital Rail Corridor Overview
Many of Haryana’s districts are essential areas of National Capital Region (NCR) which surrounds the capital city of Delhi from three sides. As a result, due to the Haryana- Gurgaon district in particular – the focus is on connectivity and integration as well as building up road and rail transportation systems for the NCR Planning Board. It is envisaged that a semi-high-speed rail line measuring 121.742 kilometers in length will link Harsana Kalan (Sonipat) and Asaoti (Palwal) in the state of Haryana passing through a maximum of seventeen stations within the perimeter of KMP (Kundli – Manesar – Palwal) / Western Peripheral Expressway mostly covering the Gurgaon district. Commuter trains based on this new broad gauged-line will provide links through Sohna, Manesar, Kharkoda even as freight services will also provide links through major logistic hubs using Dedicated Freight Corridor standards for freight transport.
The Role of Infrastructure in the Growth of Gurgaon’s Economy
Road and rail infrastructure are a catalyst for economic growth and Gurgaon is indeed blessed to have great road infrastructure courtesy of state and Union government helping bloom the city’s economy and development in a matter of a few decades. The presence of the Maruti Udyog Ltd, Flipkart, AIIMS, Global City, Jungle Safari and many other developments, Gurgaon has transformed into a top class city. Interestingly, good road infrastructure is also very critical in speeding up industrial activities. At present, six important roads or highways or expressways are passing through this district enabling an easy movement of people and goods within the city which is a basic requirement for its economic development.
Creating Fresh Seamless Linkages via the Orbital Rail Corridor
Apart from the above, the orbital rail corridor will enhance connectivity that seeks to ring Delhi and offer interchange connectivity with the main radial routes of Indian Railways namely DFC at Pirthala near Palwal, centre for major logistics and Delhi – SNB RRTS line at Panchgaon. There are five stations Dhulavat, Chandla Dungarwas, Panchgaon, Manesar, New Patli which will be a boon for Gurgaon. Also participating in this important project is the orbital corridor which would enable Shatabdi trains to operate from Gurugram to Chandigarh without passing through Delhi which is a significant advantage to daily passengers. Lastly, the corridor will be linked to the Maruti Plant located in Manesar via a railway line.
The Way Forward: Expansion of Regional Rapid Rail System and Metro Links
However, there is more than the orbital corridor as a Regional Rapid Rail System is on the making which runs via Gurgaon and there are also plans in advanced stages to extend the metro line from the millennium city metro station, old gurugram as well east gurgaon.
