Getting Rid of the Trouble Spots
The increasing levels of urbanisation are creating greater challenges of congestion and connectivity. The recently disclosed plan for a two-layer flyover on NH-8 from Dhaula Kuan to Manesar is a monumental move in easing traffic snarls on the Delhi-Gurgaon corridor. Triggered by efforts of Gurgaon MP and Union Minister Rao Inderjit Singh, the project has been sanctioned in concept by the road transport minister most recently Nitin Gadkari in December 2022. It is aimed at reducing crossing at the notoriously congested Sirhaul border and converting elevating levels of travel experiences for commuters through an elevated stretch, mainly designated for light vehicles only.
For the Traffic Jams and Poor Connections, A New Hope For the Commuters
The Directorate General of Excellence (DGPC) up until now has not spent a single rupee on the project, but has committed to collaborating with NHAI [the National Highways Authority of India] to propose a strategic land management methodology. Within two months, the organization claims it will engage a consultant to generate the whole project’s feasibility study, which will take future traffic statistics needed for predicting through the next 25 years using the bridge or elevated road designed in the future. And since there are many commuters using the Delhi-Manesar route, the need for expansion of the existing routes has been recognized and efforts are being made to provide reliable travel solutions where the commutation is convenient and practical.
The Light Vehicles Corridor Lets You Breathe Easy
In the last decade, NH-8 traffic has historically been plague plagued by significant levels and the focus for many cities and many commuters. It was the focus on significant cuts to the number of commuters and the critical loss of time faced at this intersection on a number of occasions throughout busy periods drove Rao Inderjit Singh to come up with the initiation of this elevated idea in the first place. The intention is to reduce travel and several related non-time costs by facilitating an additional upper lane which will be utilized for light traffic and thus cut travel times and ultimately deliver better travel services.
Improving Access of the Airports
The planned overpass road will be beneficial not just for the commuters of the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), also the DIAL is in a race to add capacity augmentation for the road-based links for Gurgaon to Indian Gandhi International Airport. IGI is expected to see a large increase in the number of passengers by the year end 2023, therefore it is critical that NH 8 be unclogged to facilitate easy access to the airport. This project provides a beacon of hope over the heads of millions of travelers that depend on the corridor between Delhi and Gurgaon.
Dealing with the Difficulties and Looking Towards the Future
Although initially several NHAI officials expressed opposition towards the construction of the elevated road with the argument that Dhaula Kuan flyover is too close to the international airport, such views did not deter Gadkari who was more futuristic in his thinking. He dismissed objections and ordered NHAI to work on detailed project report (DPR) for the elevated road that was earmarked for construction. There is a need for careful scheduling and coordination so that the new elevated road does not cause any inconvenience to the existing infrastructure and the flights to and from the airport.
The Bigger Picture: An Ideal Place for Connectivity
The construction of the two-layer elevated road on NH-8 from Dhaula Kuan to Manesar is a noteworthy step in addressing the traffic woes between Delhi and Gurgaon. The vision and dedication displayed by Rao Inderjit Singh to curb the plight of the commuters has successfully brought about a change in this region that will boost connectivity, lessen the duration of travel, and enhance the living standards of millions in this region as well.
While NHAI is looking for a consultant and completion of a detailed project report, people can look forward to less stressful trips in future thanks to improved connectivity and reduced traffic. This bold plan is a prime example of how smart planning of infrastructure development can transform the urban experience and vision a better and well integrated world of tomorrow.
